There has been, perhaps, too many stories where Superman fathered a child. In Superman Annual 3, Kal-El’s super-baby tried to super-kick its way out of Lois’ womb. The series Injustice: Gods Among Us has Lois pregnant again, before Superman was tricked into killing her by The Joker. And of course, there was also Kingdom Come, where Wonder Woman was pregnant with Superman’s child. And yet, still, there is still another scenario where the Man of Steel is the father of a son called Jon Kent.

Jon Kent was first introduced in Convergence: Superman issue 2 from 2015, but since it’s just a story about him being born, I wouldn’t waste my time reading it. His character was later developed in the DC Rebirth era. (DC Rebirth came after Flashpoint, and was to clean up the mess that the New 52 era created, as continuity between stories became too hard to track.)

As you may have guessed, Jon Kent is the son of Superman and Lois Lane. With the powers that he inherited from his father, he posesses super strength and super speed. Oh, and of course flight. (This would seem obvious, unless you’ve seen the show Smallville, where Superboy can’t so much as even fly three feet in the air to change the battery in a smoke detector. A ladder is literally more useful than he is on that show.) He can also use heat vision to melt objects with his eyes, which I imagine comes in handy while improvising a grilled-cheese sandwich. The best example of seeing young Jon would be in the series Super Sons, which I discussed before.

As a child, Jon Kent struggled to control his powers and often caused unintentional damage. This carries over from Superman’s upbringing, since being raised to be a good person was important to the way Superman’s personality developed. It highlights the challenges of growing up with extraordinary abilities and the importance of having strong role models.

In addition to his struggles with controlling his powers, Jon Kent’s character has made cameos in animated shows. For example, he can be seen in the show Young Justice. In season 3, episode 9, we can see Lois Lane holding Jon while he is still a baby.

Jon Kent in Young Justice

As for comics, Jon Kent stars in his own series called Superman: Son of Kal-El. He even encounters Damian Wayne, Batman’s son. (They were childhood friends from Super Sons.) If you are a fan of this character, hands-down, you should buy the trade paper-backs (Affiliate Link) of this series.

Although Jon Kent has worked hard to control his powers, accidents are bound to happen. But let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to have heat vision to make s’mores without a campfire or a quick way to melt ice off their driveway? But knowing how careless young people can be, he would more likely burn someone’s home to the ground while trying to light a cigarette with his eyes.

Superman’s son, Jon Kent, has some big shoes to fill. It must be hard to be the offspring of such a legendary hero. Imagine having to go to career day at school as the child of Superman. What could you possibly say that could compete with “My dad can fly and has bulletproof skin”? But Jon takes it all in stride, perhaps even more so than his father, and proves that he’s more than just a chip off the old Kryptonian block.
