Let me tell you about this great history of comic books documentary: Comic Book Confidential (1988). There are not too many comic book movies on DVD I’ve noticed, but this is definitely one of the best. It contains many interviews from comic book legends that other comic book documentaries have over looked.

The Comic Book Confidential DVD is incredibly unique and surprised me in many ways. For one, it spends much time focusing on underground comic books and underground comic book artists such as Robert Crumb. It also has interviews from such legends as Jack Kirby, Will Eisner and Stan Lee. There is even archival footage of the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency from 1954. This is infamously from when comic books were seen as being evil.

One of the best scenes of Comic Book Confidential is the interview with Dan O’Neill, who created the underground comic Air Pirates. Dan O’Neill was involved in a popular lawsuit by Disney for using their characters in an obscene manner. In the documentary, he proceeds to show the viewer Air Pirates 2, where the likeness of Mickey Mouse is giving Minny Mouse oral sex.

What is also interesting is that many comics are not only shown, but read out loud by the artist. If you are interested, you can find the Comic Book Confidential DVD on Amazon. (affiliate link) There is so much to see that it is definitely worth watching more than once.
