The BPRD, also known as the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, is a fictional organization originated in the Hellboy stories. There is a BPRD comic series published by Dark Horse which focuses on the group that protects America from paranormal threats. You may have heard about the BPRD if you had ever seen the Hellboy movies (or Hellboy comics, of course).

What makes the BPRD interesting is that it uses a combination of paranormal agents and regular human agents on its team. One of my favorites is Abe Sapien, an amphibious man. But the best has to be Liz Sherman, who has pyrokinetic abilities (able to create fires using her mind). Sadly, she was not always able to control her abilities and had thus killed her entire family. You can see why Liz is such an interesting character.

Due to the subject matter, the BPRD comic has the stage set up for violence. Monster hunting often leads to blood and guts all over the place. Don’t be surprised if you were to spot a beheading, raw intestines, body parts, or all of the above. However, it is fitting to the storytelling, and it is never solely for shock value.

If supernatural beasts interest you, check out the BPRD comic for yourself. Unless you are scared, you coward.
